FAQ

REGISTRATION

Do I have to register to Whisky Hammer before selling or bidding?

Yes - registration is very simple on our Registration Page. There is a one-off registration fee of £3 (+ VAT) - this is to ensure genuine sellers/bidders.

VALUATIONS

Can you provide a valuation for my bottle(s)?

Yes - we offer a free, indicative, valuation service. You can request a valuation by filling in the form under the Request Valuation page on the website, or alternatively by sending details to us at valuations@whiskyhammer.co.uk. We recommend sending a photo of your bottle(s) to help us provide a more accurate valuation.

BUYING

How often are your auctions held?

We run auctions on a monthly basis, see below our upcoming auctions;

Auction Live / Ends (from 7pm GMT) Bottles (from Seller) Required By...
22nd December - 7th January 11th December
16th February - 25th February 5th February

How does the auction work, and how do I place a bid?

After you have registered as a member of Whisky Hammer you will be able to place bids on any live auctions. Bidding is easy, simply enter your maximum bid in the lot auction page - you will then be prompted with a 'Confirmation' message. Please ensure you have entered the correct bid at this stage as you will be entering a legally bound contract as explained in our Terms & Conditions. We are not able to retract bids entered in error.

Whisky Hammer will automatically bid on the item for you, up to your maximum bid, based on the following incremental bidding rules:

Minimum next bid  Incremental Bid
£0 - £9.99

£1.00

£10 - £49.99 £2.50
£50 - £99.99 £5.00
£100 - £499 £10.00
£500 - £999 £20.00
£1000 - £2499 £25.00
£2500 - £4999 £50.00
£5000+ £100.00

After placing a bid we will keep you up to date via e-mail with all the relevant information, and alert you if you have been outbid. If you are the highest bidder at the end of the auction, we will send an e-mail link with simple payment instructions to complete the purchase.

What fees are involved as a Buyer?

  • Buyer's Commission: is 10% of the final hammer price (the winning bid).
  • Delivery costs: will depend on your location and the weight of the items you have won (see International Shipping).
  • Payment surcharges (where payment is made by credit card or PayPal): 3% for major credit card payments (including Amex) and 3.5% for payments by PayPal.

If you live within the EU, VAT of 20% will be added to all fees, including delivery and commission, but not added to the hammer price. If you live outside the EU, you will not be charged VAT.

Who is responsible for the bottles at each stage of the auction?

It is the sellers responsibility to ensure a safe transit of bottles to us at our office in Aberdeenshire, UK - the seller will be liable for any damage caused during transit to us. After we have taken delivery of your bottles we will send you an e-mail to let you know they have arrived safe and sound. From that point on we have full responsibility for your bottles which will be held in our secure storage and fully insured. The buyer will become responsible for the bottle as soon as it leaves our premises.

Why is the auction timer still going beyond 7pm (GMT) on the auction end date?

We use 'anti-sniping' software to ensure that everyone is treated fairly. If a bid is placed on an auction item within the last 5 minutes of the auction timer, the end time for that item will be increased by a further 10 minutes to allow fair bidding time for the 2nd highest bidder to consider bidding again. Auction timers will not end until there has been a period of 5 minutes with no bidding activity.

When is payment due for bottles I have won?

We will send you an e-mail as soon as you win any auctions. Payment is immediately due, and must be made within 3 days of the end of the auction to avoid late payment fees.

What payment methods do you accept?

Payment can be made by all major debit/credit cards, by PayPal, or by Bank Transfer. Payments made by major credit cards (including Amex) will incur a surcharge of 3%, payments via PayPal will incur a surcharge of 3.5%.  Payments made by international bank transfers will incur a £7 fee, and in this case the buyer must agree to all FX charges when transferring the payment.

What shipping options are available to get the bottles I have won delivered to me?

We offer a world class courier service with competitive shipping rates. Please refer to our International Shipping page for locations we can deliver to and associated charges. Alternatively, if you are local you can request to pick-up the items you have won for free at our office in Ellon, Aberdeenshire.
